Over 300 confirmed cases of measles in Ohio, a 10-year high

A measles outbreak is hitting Ohio. Health officials are working hard to control the disease and stop the spread.

This is the largest measles outbreak in the United States since 1994. Right now there are more than 300 confirmed cases in Ohio. That's why doctors are doing everything they can to prepare for cases that might show up in the Toledo area.

"There's no treatment. There's no medication if you get measles," said Susan Elsea, Infection Prevention and Control, ProMedica.

The number of measles cases in Ohio is at a 10-year high. It is prompting state and local leaders to take action. They're working closely with hospitals and making sure they know what to do if someone comes in with a case.

"Measles is very contagious. It's very easily communicated from one person to another person," said Elsea.

Elsea with ProMedica says the disease spreads through the air by breathing or coughing. Staff members are prepared and have special equipment to prevent the spread.

"These are called personal protective equipment. So the respirator mask is worn by the staff when they enter the room of the patient," said Elsea.

According to the CDC, the outbreak is primarily among unvaccinated Amish communities in Ohio. Health leaders say it's so important to get your shot, and keep a proper hygiene routine to stay healthy.

"In addition to getting vaccinated, use good hand hygiene. Cover your coughs and if you're sick, stay home," said Elsea.

In response to the outbreak, Governor Kasich recently signed an order that allows pharmacies to now give the measles shot to anyone over the age of 18. If you haven't had yours, that's another option you can consider to stay healthy.
