CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -
Xavier University sophomore point guard Semaj Christon was projected to go mid-to-late second round of the 2014 NBA Draft, and he had to wait until the final few picks to finally hear his name called. Christon was selected by the Miami Heat with the 55th overall pick, which was the 25th pick of the second round.
The 6-foot-3, Cincinnati, Ohio native didn't stay with the Heat for long though, as his draft rights were traded away to the Charlotte Hornets, along with the draft rights to the 26th overall pick P.J. Hairston, a 2019 second-round pick and cash considerations, in exchange for the draft rights to the 24th overall pick Shabazz Napier.
Again, Christon didn't stay with the same team for long as the Hornets then traded his draft rights to the Oklahoma City Thunder for cash considerations.
"Semaj is excited to become an NBA player. It's been his dream since he started bouncing a basketball," said Xavier head coach Chris Mack.
Christon led the Musketeers in scoring for the second straight season, with 17 points per game, to go along with 4.2 assists, 2.7 rebounds and 1.3 steals per game. Christon was selected 2014 First-Team All BIG EAST Conference and was selected as a member of the 2014 All-BIG EAST Tournament Team.
Christon is the first former Xavier Musketeer to be drafted since the New Jersey Nets took Jordan Crawford in the first round of the 2010 Draft. He is the ninth former Muskie to be drafted in the second round of the NBA Draft, and the first since Derrick Brown was drafted by the Charlotte Bobcats in 2009.
