Neighbor remembers slain Indianapolis officer

Posted: Updated:

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Speakers at the funeral of a slain Indianapolis police officer remembered him as a friend and neighbor, not just a hero.

Family friend Sabrina Young said Friday that 51-year-old Officer Perry Renn used to park his police car in his driveway instead of his garage to help neighbors feel safe and helped those who lived nearby with everyday tasks like snow blowing their property.

Thousands of police officers and spectators gathered for Renn's funeral at Bankers Life Fieldhouse Friday. Officials say Renn died Saturday night after being shot three times by a man armed with an AK-47 assault rifle.

Police Chief Rick Hite says Renn saved several bystanders.

A giant video screen above Renn's flag-draped coffin played scenes of him bicycling on family trips and playing with his dogs.
