Red panda cub thrives at Fort Wayne Children's Zoo

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) - Officials say a red panda cub born about a month ago at the Fort Wayne Children's Zoo is thriving.

Zoo spokeswoman Cheryl Piropato tells The Journal Gazette (http://bit.ly/1rgQWDZ ) that this female cub has been more robust than others since she was born June 9.

The cub was the third litter of cubs to be born at the zoo in the last three years, but none of the three cubs born in 2012 and 2013 lived longer than two weeks. She weighed about a third of a pound when she was born and now weighs about a full pound.

Zookeeper Helena Lacey describes the cub as "feisty, squirmy and chubby."

Red pandas are an endangered species and difficult to breed and raise in zoos.
